Born in 1968, Robert's interest in the sea started at an
early age when, living near Liverpool, he used to stand
on the banks of the River Mersey and watch the ships coming
and going. Whilst at school, Robert was considering a career
at sea, but he showed great promise as an artist, and he
wisely opted to study art and design at college, which led
to employment as a graphic designer and illustrator.
Robert continued to paint for pleasure in
his spare time, and his success in this medium soon led to
the decision to make it his full time career.
He is now one of Europe's most sought after
marine artists, and his work has been described by many within
the shipping world as 'the most technically accurate and visually
stunning of recent times'.
Robert’s work encompasses every conceivable
type of vessel from sleek sailing yachts, ferries, container-ships
and tankers to unlikely subjects such as oil-rigs, dredgers
and pilot boats, and he is an acknowledged expert at producing
technically accurate and atmospheric views of ships from plans
before they are built.
Merchant Ships of yesterday - Book review
" The golden age of shipping in the
late 1950s and 60s are celebrated in a book of paintings by
respect marine artist Robert Lloyd. With 61 paintings, The
British Merchant Navy: Images and Experiences depicts passenger
ships, cargo liners, tankers and tramps from that era.
This book is a treasure. Each ship featured
has two pages devoted to her. One is a whole page painting
by Mr. Lloyd of the ship often underway. Anyone who has seen
some of his paintings or prints can only be enthralled by
the quality. The attention to detail is what makes Mr Lloyd's
pictures so special. The detail not just of the ship but also
the setting for the painting give it a special 'feel' and
as you turn the pages, the ships depicted in this book seem
to be alive - such is Mr Lloyd's talent for capturing a ship
at sea or in port.
The other page features the story of the
ship, giving her career, and some company history, described
by Roy Fenton, as well as the memories of some of those who
served on her. For each ship, there is also a black and white
photograph or a cameo depicting another member of the fleet.
The ships featured represent 36 of the most
famous companies in British maritime history, from the Queen
Elizabeth 2 and Mauretania of Cunard to the Scoresby and Sandsend
of Headlam & Son and the Halia of Shell and the British
Reliance of BP."
